Example Resume Format
NAME
Use your full name. If you have a nickname, put it in parentheses.
Include address and contact information such as phone numbers and email address
EDUCATION
In this section, include any appropriate undergraduate and graduate degrees in order of most recent to oldest. If your grade point average was “B” level (3.0/4.0) or higher, be sure to include it. Also, include meaningful distinctions, such as “cum laude.” Below the degree(s), include any specialized certifications that are pertinent to the IT field.
TECHNICAL SUMMARY
Summarize your technical skills in operating systems, programming languages, and software tools, particularly those that you have used in the last three to five years. It is important that the skills in this section tie to the detail that is provided in the next section of the resume, EXPERIENCE. For example, if you list that you have two years of widget experience, the employer should be able to go to the detail within the EXPERIENCE section of the resume and locate where you used widgets for two years. Make sure you include all of your skills.
EMPLOYMENT EXPERIENCE
Include the company, city and state, dates of employment (month/year), position title, and narrative that includes responsibilities, noteworthy accomplishments, application experience, and hardware/software that you used. Don’t use acronyms or terminology that aren’t universally known within the industry.
- Please include the following before you type the responsibilities:
Employer Name and Location
Use the employer’s name or an abbreviation that is most commonly recognized. The location is the city and state where you performed your work.
- Dates of Employment
For each employer, show the month and year for both start and finish dates; if you are still employed, then show “to present.”
- Position Title
This is the generic identifier to let potential employers know what you did. Even though you may have performed multiple tasks, type the title that represents what you did most often. Make sure you use universal titles rather than internal titles. If you performed both permanent and contract consulting work, indicate the type of work you performed (permanent or contract) in parentheses next to the position title.
- Position Responsibilities
In three or four sentences, summarize the roles and responsibilities you performed in this position. Begin with a verb that indicates you are proactive and are skilled in an area. If you are/were a manager, list the number of direct/indirect responsibilities, size of budget you managed, and if you have hired/fired personnel.
Accomplishments
List one or two lines that highlight significant accomplishments you made while in that position. These lines help bring the resume to life. To arrive at these accomplishments, ask questions such as:
What was I most proud of while I was in this position?
What obstacles did I overcome?
What changes were the direct result of my efforts?
